We are thrilled to announce our first keynote speaker – Kohei Saito!

Kohei Saito is an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Tokyo, with a PhD in philosophy from the Humboldt University of Berlin.

His 2017 book “Karl Marx’s Ecosocialism: Capital, Nature and the Unfinished Critique of Political Economy” was awarded the Isaac Deutscher Memorial Prize of 2018, the most prestigious academic award for Marxian studies, making him the youngest recipient of that honor. The book has been published in 8 languages.

Saito’s “‘Capital’ in the Anthropocene” (2020) was a pathbreaking interpretation of Marx’s theory of postcapitalism in the age of climate crisis, selling 500,000 copies in Japan. The book presents a Marxist argument for degrowth as a means of mitigating climate change. It was one of the “Best Asian Books of the Year” in the Asia Book Awards 2021, and will be published in English in 2023.

His next book “Marx in the Anthropocene”, an argument for degrowth communism, will be published from the Cambridge University Press by the end of 2022.

We are excited to hear Kohei speak in Zagreb!
